Provenance and Tribal Heritage

The Afshari are a Turkic tribe with deep roots in the Caucasus, who migrated southward over centuries and settled in large numbers in the region around Sirjan and Kerman in southeastern Iran. They brought with them a distinctly nomadic weaving vocabulary — bold geometric forms, stylised botanical motifs, and the characteristic Caucasian-Persian colour confidence that distinguishes Afshari work from the more refined urban Persian schools.

This piece was hand-knotted by Afshari weavers in the Sirjan region of southeastern Iran from 100% wool on a wool foundation — the traditional tribal construction, in which both pile and structure are built from the same hand-spun yarn. Wool-on-wool gives the surface its characteristic suppleness, density and depth; it is also the most demanding construction to execute well, as the structural wool must be spun firmly enough to hold the knots over generations. The dyes are natural vegetable pigments — the colour register lives and breathes through the surface in a way that synthetic dyes cannot replicate.

Colour and Composition

The palette is built on a quiet field with bold motifs in deep indigo, faded coral-pink and warm beige. The composition follows the Afshari nomadic vocabulary — geometric medallions, stepped diamond motifs and stylised botanical figures arranged with the directness that distinguishes tribal work from urban-workshop production. A composition for an interior that values craft and tribal honesty over urban refinement.

Presence in the Room

At 198 × 140 cm (2.8 m²) this is a versatile near-square piece. Three contexts in which the Afshari reaches its full effect:

• Bedroom or bedside: Beside or at the foot of a bed, the wool-on-wool construction adds tactile warmth and the natural pigments deepen at evening light.
• Dining nook for four to six: Under a small table, the tribal field reads as a clear and confident pattern from above.
• Modern loft or city apartment: Against concrete, raw wood and natural materials, the saturated tribal idiom acts as a quiet but unmistakable counterpoint to architectural restraint.
