Provenance and Tribal Heritage

The Bakhtiari are one of the large tribal confederations of central Iran, traditionally semi-nomadic, living in the Zagros mountains south of Isfahan. Bakhtiari pieces combine the structural strength of tribal work with a floral vocabulary that draws on neighbouring Isfahan workshops — a synthesis of nomadic and urban weaving.

This piece was hand-knotted by Bakhtiari weavers in the Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari region of central Iran, from 100 % highland wool on a cotton foundation. The composition follows the classical Bakhtiari idiom — a central floral medallion anchors the field, with floral motifs spread symmetrically across the inner ground.

Colour and Composition

The palette is built on a quiet ground with muted floral motifs — the saturation the rug carried when new has softened through decades of use into a balanced, natural patina. The surface bears the marks of use.

Presence in the Room

At 135 × 205 cm (2.8 m²) this is a medium room-size piece. Three contexts in which the vintage Bakhtiari comes into its own:

• Modern loft or city apartment: the lived-in patina pairs well with raw concrete, blackened steel, oak and leather — adding craft and history to a reduced interior.
• Bedroom or dressing area: beside or at the foot of a bed, the highland wool gives a warm tactile foundation, and the muted floral field reads as a quiet anchor.
• Country house or period interior: in a room with darker wood furniture and warm lighting, the floral medallion suits the kind of interior it was made for.
