Shirvan Chichi Rug
Hand-spun highland wool on a cotton foundation, woven in Azerbaijan in the mid-20th century.
The Weave
The Shirvan group from the eastern Caucasus is prized for its tightly drawn geometry, and the Chichi (Chi-Chi) is its most recognisable member — identified by the distinctive border of diagonal bars alternating with small rosettes. Here a deep indigo field carries an all-over lattice of stylised blossoms and rosettes in red, ivory and green. It is hand-knotted from hand-spun highland wool on a cotton foundation: a rare mid-century piece in very good condition, with the saturated colours these weavings are prized for.

At 189 × 135 cm (6.2 × 4.4 ft) it makes a grounding centrepiece for a seating area, study or bedroom. The deep blue ground reads as a calm anchor, while the graphic Caucasian geometry gives it character against both modern and traditional interiors.
