Provenance and Knotting Tradition

Gouchan (Quchan) lies in the Khorasan region of northeastern Persia, a weaving area known for finely knotted, supple rugs. This piece takes the classical Heriz medallion design — a stepped central medallion with corner spandrels on an open field — but renders it at a much finer knot count than the geometric village Heriz of the northwest. The result is a rug with crisp, detailed drawing and a notably cloth-like, supple handle — the mark of fine Khorasan wool worked at a high knot density.

It was hand-knotted in Gouchan in the 1970s–80s from 100% wool on a wool foundation, coloured with natural, vegetable-based dyes. The wool-on-wool construction and the natural dyes give the piece its warm, harmonious register and the suppleness that distinguishes a genuine fine Khorasan rug.

Colour and Composition

A warm brick-red field carries the fine Heriz drawing — branching floral vinework around a stepped central medallion in navy, ivory and light blue with green and rose floral interior. Ivory corner spandrels frame the field with floral sprays, and a deep navy main border carries palmettes and flowering vines. The whole is drawn in clear vegetable-dyed naturals — green, rose-pink, light blue, gold and bordeaux on the brick-red and navy grounds. Ivory wool fringes finish the ends.

At 297 × 203 cm (6.0 m²) this is a generous room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Gouchan reaches its full effect:

• Living room anchor: Under a full seating arrangement, the medallion grounds the space and the brick-red and navy palette warms the room without competing.
• Dining room: Beneath a six-to-eight-seat table, the supple yet durable wool surface withstands chair traffic, and the fine composition holds its own under overhead lighting.
• Library or study: The classical Heriz geometry pairs well with bookshelves, leather and dark wood — a foundation textile for traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
