Loribaft

Loribaft is the finer variant within the Gabbeh family, knotted by Lori and Bakhtiari weavers of the Zagros mountains in southwest Iran: more densely knotted than a classic Gabbeh, but with the same soft, upright pile. This piece is made wool on wool — pile, warp and weft are all sheep’s wool — the original construction of the Lori and Qashqai tribes, which gives a softer, more supple fabric than a cotton foundation. The wool is hand-spun and coloured exclusively with vegetable dyes.

Design: Qashqai Kilim Pattern

The field follows the Qashqai kilim pattern: twenty small diamond medallions in five rows of four, each with a cross-shaped blossom at its core. The fillings change between dark blue, light blue, ivory, olive and orange without a fixed rhythm — a vocabulary taken from Qashqai flatweaving and translated here into knotted pile. The ground is a warm terracotta with distinct abrash: the depth of colour moves across the surface because the hand-spun yarn was dyed in separate lots. A chain of small ivory cross-stars runs around the field. The golden-yellow main border carries a large blue sawtooth band, also from the kilim tradition, with narrow orange and dark blue stripes outside.

Quality

Knotted at around 120,000 knots per square metre (approx. 77 kpsi), with a pile of about 20 mm: the rug stands high and full, the drawing stays bold and clear, and it is very soft underfoot.

Presence in the Room

At 147 × 104 cm (4.8 × 3.4 ft, 1.53 m²) this is a versatile accent format:

• Bedroom: beside the bed, where the high pile is especially pleasant.
• Living room: as a splash of colour beside an armchair or in front of a shelf, see our living room rugs.
• Entrance hall or children’s room: in front of the door, beneath a coat stand, or as a soft, colourful rug for a child’s room.

More pieces: small area rugs.
