Loribaft Tribal Rug
147 × 104 cm · Natural Dyes
A characterful hand-knotted Loribaft rug woven by the nomads of the Zagros mountains in south-west Iran — thick, hand-spun wool in natural dyes, with a lively lattice of tribal diamond motifs on a warm terracotta field.
Nomadic Craftsmanship
Loribaft rugs are hand-knotted by the Lori and Bakhtiari nomads of the Zagros region in south-west Iran. Each piece is a spontaneous, one-of-a-kind work with no formal cartoon — the weaver composes the design from memory and feeling. The result is a warm, characterful rug with a thick, soft wool pile.
The Design
A warm terracotta field carries a rhythmic lattice of small diamond medallions in indigo, ivory, green and orange, each one drawn slightly differently by hand. The field is framed by a camel-gold inner border and a bold zig-zag border in indigo blue, a hallmark of tribal weaving. The gentle abrash (colour variation) in the ground is the natural signature of hand-spun, naturally dyed wool.
Natural Dyes & Wool
The rug is hand-knotted in 100% hand-spun wool over a wool foundation, coloured with natural dyes. Wool-on-wool construction is typical of authentic nomadic weaving and gives the piece its supple handle and lasting durability.
Colour
The palette is warm and earthy: a terracotta to salmon-red ground, set against indigo blue, with ivory, green and orange accents and a camel-gold inner border. The natural dyes give the colours a soft, sun-warmed depth.
Presence in the Room
At 147 × 104 cm (1.53 m²) this is a versatile small format — a true 3 × 5 ft accent rug:
- Bedside or hallway: a warm, characterful accent underfoot.
- Living room: a colourful counterpoint layered over a larger plain rug.
- Study or reading nook: a cosy tribal touch for a smaller space.
