Provenance and Tribal Heritage

The Beni Mguild are a Berber tribal confederation of Morocco's Middle Atlas mountains. Their rugs are hand-knotted by Berber women on simple upright looms, most often in compact household formats. At 190 × 435 cm, this piece is a long, narrow format, which is less common: it requires a loom and a weaver able to commit to a single extended composition.

This piece was hand-knotted by Berber weavers in the Beni Mguild region of the Middle Atlas, Morocco between approximately 1970 and 1990, entirely in 100 % hand-spun sheep's wool in both pile and foundation — the traditional Berber wool-on-wool construction. The thick, plush pile has a soft hand. The composition follows the Beni Mguild abstract diamond lattice that runs the full length of the field, drawn freely rather than mathematically — each lozenge a small individual variation.

Colour and Composition

The palette sets this Beni Mguild apart: a deep, saturated magenta-to-purple field. The colour is alive with abrash — the gentle horizontal striations that arise in hand-spun wool — shifting between fuchsia, plum and softer lilac-greige in the diamond drawing. The free-form lattice gives the long format a clear visual rhythm, and the vivid colour makes the rug a strong feature in a room.

Presence in the Room

At 190 × 435 cm (6.2 × 14.3 ft), 8.3 m² this is a large-format piece in an elongated proportion. Three contexts in which the long Beni Mguild comes into its own:

• Long living room or loft: the 435 cm length suits a long sofa group or the spine of an open-plan loft, where the saturated colour becomes the focal point.
• Hallway or open spine of a modern apartment: the format and vivid palette set a clear tone; the diamond lattice reads as a sustained rhythm.
• Bedroom lengthwise: placed alongside a king-size bed, the long Beni Mguild gives a soft, tactile foundation.
