Provenance and Design Heritage

The city of Agra in northern India has produced fine hand-knotted carpets since the Mughal era, when imperial workshops reworked classical court designs into a distinctly Indian idiom. This rug is newly hand-knotted in Agra in that living tradition, drawing on a vintage Tabriz design of the kind the renowned PETAG workshops (Persische Teppich Gesellschaft AG) revived in the early twentieth century — patterns with roots in the court carpets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Design and Construction

A central medallion and a finely drawn all-over floral field — palmettes, scrolling vines and blossoms — are worked in the elegant Tabriz manner and framed by a classic main border. The pile is pure wool on a cotton warp and weft, hand-knotted and clipped to a low, even pile of approximately 1.1 cm that keeps the drawing crisp. Each piece is an individual one-off; small variations in wash and abrash are part of its hand-made character.

Colour and Composition

The palette is soft and warm: a beige and ivory ground carrying browns and muted earth tones, with the floral design picked out in gentle contrast. A light wash lends the rug a vintage, almost antique glow that settles easily into both classic and contemporary interiors.

Presence in the Room

At 343 × 260 cm (8.9 m²) this is a large-format rug that rewards a generous space:

• Dining room: Under a table for six to eight, with room for the chairs to stay on the rug when drawn back.
• Living room: Large enough to carry a full seating group on a single ground.
• Representative space: An entrance hall, library or office where a classic floral rug sets a calm, established tone.

Because this design is woven to order in our workshops in Agra and Jaipur, it can be commissioned in other sizes and colourways to suit a specific room. Lead times typically run a few months; we are glad to advise on proportions and palette.
