A PETAG-Style Revival, Hand-Knotted in India
This rug is woven in the design tradition of PETAG (Persische Teppich AG), a German-led company founded in Berlin in 1911 whose programme was to revive the great Persian court compositions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. PETAG's original production took place in Tabriz and other workshops between roughly 1911 and the 1930s; its design language has since become a recognised genre in the trade.
This piece is a new hand-knotted rug in the PETAG manner, produced in India, at approximately 100 kpsi. It is hand-knotted in 95 % wool and 5 % silk on a cotton foundation.
The Design — Safavid Revival
The composition follows the PETAG repertoire: a central medallion with floral pendants, corner figures balancing the medallion, and a multi-band border carrying connecting palmettes.
Colour and Composition
A deep royal blue field is set against broad passages of old rose pink and gold-saffron, with the dark central medallion framed in gold. The drawing is carried through in light blue, ivory and coral, and the border runs a light-blue ground with a gold inner guard.
Presence in the Room
At 122 × 183 cm (2.23 m²) this is a small format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Study: beside a desk or under a single armchair, where the drawing can be seen at close range.
- Bedroom: beside or at the foot of a bed, where the silk adds a subtle sheen to the floral drawing.
- Entryway: in a generous entry.
Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring; suitable above underfloor heating.
