Vintage Rose-Bidjar
76 × 113 cm · Gol-Farang Medallion, c. 1970s–1980s
A vintage Bidjar in the classical Rose (Gol-Farang) medallion, hand-knotted at approximately 400,000 knots per m².
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
Bidjar is a small town in the Kurdish region of northwestern Iran. Bidjar rugs are known in the trade as the “iron rug of Persia” — hand-knotted at high density and beaten down firmly, so that the resulting fabric is stiff and sturdy.
This piece was hand-knotted in the Bidjar region in the 1970s–1980s, with approximately 400,000 knots per m² (260 knots per inch²). It is made of 100 % wool on a cotton foundation. The composition follows the classical Rose-Bidjar / Gol-Farang pattern — a luminous ivory-beige field framed by a deep indigo border, with a central medallion in rust red and delicate rose tones. The Gol-Farang (“European flower”) motif entered the Bidjar repertoire in the 19th century.
Presence in the Room
At 76 × 113 cm (0.9 m²) this is a compact accent piece. Three contexts in which the Rose-Bidjar comes into its own:
- Entrance hall: as an accent rug, the Rose-Bidjar combines the sturdy Bidjar construction with a refined floral idiom.
- Library or study: beside a writing desk or as a bedside rug in a panelled space, the fine medallion rewards close looking.
- Wall hanging: mounted as a small textile, the Rose-Bidjar suits a hallway, dressing area or boudoir.
