Provenance and Berber Heritage

The Beni Ourain are a confederation of Berber tribes who have lived for centuries in the Middle Atlas mountains of northern Morocco. Their hand-knotted rugs are known for cream wool grounds and geometric motifs in charcoal lines. Originally woven as functional blankets for the cold mountain winters, Beni Ourain rugs became popular in mid-20th-century interior design alongside clean, modernist architecture.

This piece was hand-knotted by Beni Ourain weavers in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco, from undyed cream wool on a cotton foundation. The composition departs from the classical Beni Ourain lozenge vocabulary by placing a stylised lion at the centre of the field, drawn in the same charcoal lines as the surrounding border.

Colour and Composition

The palette follows the classical Beni Ourain idiom: a cream ivory ground with the drawing in charcoal-brown, in the natural undyed colours of the wool. At the centre stands the stylised lion — upright tail, striped body, blocky maned head. The field is framed by a double charcoal-line border filled with small scattered tribal devices (arrow, sprig and dot motifs). Knotted wool fringes finish both ends. The design is minimal, graphic and two-tone.

Presence in the Room

At 125 × 185 cm (2.3 m²) this is a small format. Three settings in which it works well:

• Modern living room: the two-tone cream and charcoal palette sits quietly next to light wood and plain furniture.
• Children's room or family space: the lion gives the rug a playful character.
• Bedroom or reading nook: beside a bed or an armchair, the shaggy wool pile gives a soft surface.
