Hand-knotted in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains on a cotton foundation — a light cream ground carrying nested diamonds in fine multicolour line-work.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
Azilal rugs are hand-knotted by Berber weavers in the village workshops of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, north-east of Marrakesh. The Azilal idiom is freer and more colourful than the disciplined Beni Ourain of the Middle Atlas — here the weaver works concentric diamond medallions in fine, vivid line-work against a cream ground. Azilal is almost always knotted on a cotton foundation, which gives the piece a lighter handle and an even back.
This piece sets nested, concentric diamonds across a soft cream highland-wool ground. The outline-work shifts through violet, cornflower blue, green, magenta, navy and olive — a quietly festive, rhythmic composition that stays light and airy thanks to the generous cream field. Fresh, modern and boho in character.
