Bouquets of roses, carnations and daisies scattered over a warm, saturated orange-red ground, framed by a light beige floral border — a Sarouk from Ghiasabad, made in the production of Sherkat Farsh.
Provenance: Ghiasabad and Sherkat Farsh
The Sarouk district near Arak in central Iran has given its name to one of the best-known families of Persian rugs: densely knotted, with full floral drawing. Within the region, Ghiasabad is regarded in the trade as the epitome of fine workmanship. This piece comes from the production of Sherkat Farsh, the Iran Carpet Company founded as a state enterprise in the 1930s, which organises the weaving workshops and supervises their work.
Design: Bouquets on Orange Red
The field carries a floral all-over design without a medallion: individual bouquets and feathered sprays, loosely staggered and mirrored along the long axis. Roses, carnations, daisies and curving acanthus leaves each stand on their own, linked only by fine tendrils. The blossoms appear in ivory, cream, ochre, light blue and dark brown against the warm orange-red ground, with open ground left between the bouquets so the surface stays calm. The light beige main border repeats the same flowers on a smaller scale along a curving vine.
Quality
Knotted with the symmetric knot at approximately 360,000 knots per square metre, roughly 232 kpsi, in 100% wool from highland pastures on a cotton foundation. The wool’s natural lanolin gives it a fine sheen and a soft handle; the dense pile of 10 to 12 mm gives the piece body and deepens the colour of the ground.
