Provenance: Qum

Qum, south of Tehran, came late to rug weaving: its workshops only began in the early 20th century. Free of old tribal conventions, its weavers drew on the whole repertoire of classical Persian design and soon became known for some of the finest knotting in the country. Alongside its famous silk rugs, Qum produces exquisite pieces in kork wool, the soft, lustrous wool from the neck and shoulders of the sheep, which allows unusually fine and precise drawing.

Design: A Garden in Bloom

At the centre sits a baroque medallion with scrolling copper-red contours, its blush-pink interior filled with blossoms around a dark rosette, extended by fine floral pendants above and below. Around it, ten floral bouquets of roses, peonies, cornflowers and sprays of small blossoms are arranged in perfect mirror symmetry on the ivory field, with a woven flower basket in each corner and delicate vines tracing the edges. The bouquets recall the European rose motifs that Persian weavers have made their own since the 19th century.

Several narrow guard stripes in olive and brown frame the field. The broad rose-beige main border alternates large red and blue star rosettes with cartouches of pink roses, finished by a deep red outer band. In the cartouche of the upper border, the signature of the workshop is knotted in Persian script.

Quality

Knotted at approximately 400,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 258 kpsi, in 100% wool on a cotton warp, with a short 9 mm pile. At this density every petal and leaf is drawn with crisp contours, and the light ivory ground keeps its calm clarity.
