Rose-Bidjar Rug
404 × 283 cm · Ivory Medallion on Deep Red
A finely knotted Rose-Bidjar from the Kurdish highlands of western Iran — a luminous ivory medallion and rose-laden borders on a deep madder-red field, in the dense, hard-wearing construction for which Bidjar is famous.
Provenance and Heritage
The town of Bidjar in Kurdistan, north-western Iran, lends its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — so tightly packed that collectors call them the “iron rugs of Persia.” This Rose-Bidjar was hand-knotted there in the 1950s–60s and has aged into a calm, even patina while keeping its full pile and structural weight. At 404 × 283 cm it is a genuine room-filling format, made to anchor a large living or dining space for generations.
Design and Construction
A luminous ivory medallion in a rosette-star form sits at the centre, framed by ink-blue cartouches and rose palmettes and floating on a deep red field worked with a fine all-over floral lattice. The signature of a Rose-Bidjar is its garden of roses — open rose blossoms recur in the medallion, the navy corner spandrels and the ivory main border, drawn with the crisp, lightly geometric hand of Kurdish weavers. The pile is pure cork wool (the soft first shear of young lambs), knotted at approximately 160 kpsi on a cotton warp and weft — the combination that gives a Bidjar its weight, density and decades of hard wear.
Colour and Composition
The palette is the classic Bidjar register: a deep madder-red ground, navy borders and spandrels, and a warm ivory medallion and main border, lit with rose pink, soft green, light blue and touches of gold. Natural dyes throughout, settled and harmonised with age.
Presence in the Room
At 404 × 283 cm (11.4 m²) this is a large-format rug that rewards a generous space:
- Formal dining room: Under a table for eight to ten, with room for the chairs to stay on the rug when drawn back.
- Living room: Large enough to carry a full seating group — sofa, armchairs and table anchored on a single ground.
- Representative space: An entrance hall, library or office where a dense, classic Persian rug sets a tone of permanence.
