Palatial Khotan Design Rug
9 × 18 ft · 260 × 550 cm · Tibetan Wool & Silk
Hand-knotted in Nepal in Tibetan wool and silk — a Djoharian interpretation of the Khotan tradition, made to order for long dining tables.
The Khotan Tradition, Reinterpreted
This palatial rug is a contemporary Djoharian interpretation of a classic of the Silk Road — the geometric carpets associated with Khotan in Eastern Turkestan. Historic Khotan rugs were woven in the oasis towns of the Tarim Basin from the 17th century onward, with geometric medallions, pomegranate fields and lattice grounds, and a colour language that blended Persian, Chinese and Central Asian influences.
Our design is not a copy but a reinterpretation for contemporary architecture. It pairs a round central medallion and corner ornaments with a wide, multi-tiered border of key-band (T-meander), flower rosettes and cloud-band volutes in ivory, silver-grey, beige and a quiet blue accent.
Material & Construction
The pile is a blend of approx. two-thirds Tibetan wool and one-third silk. The silk component catches light differently than wool and gives the surface a slight sheen when seen from changing angles.
Hand-knotted at approximately 100 kpsi (~155,000 knots per m²), on a cotton warp and weft, with an 8–10 mm pile.
Presence in the Room
At 260 × 550 cm (14.3 m², approx. 9 × 18 ft) this is a true palatial format. Three contexts in which the rug works well:
- Long dining table: a proportion for seating of ten to fourteen — wide enough that chairs stay on the rug when drawn back.
- Long living space, entrance hall or gallery corridor: a runner-format anchor in architectural rooms.
- Stately interiors: the soft ivory-grey-blue palette suits pale oak, brushed steel, cream linen and natural stone.
Bespoke — Made to Your Architecture
This rug is part of our made-to-order Djoharian Collection. It can be adapted to your project:
- Size: 260 × 550 cm shown — any other format on request
- Colour palette: adjustable to your interior, your samples or your architect's specification
- Material mix: the wool-to-silk ratio can shift toward more silk (more sheen) or more wool (more matte)
- Design scale: medallion, border and field can be redrawn at different scales
- Production time: typically 4–6 months from order confirmation
