Rows of small stepped diamond medallions on a light-blue field, a serrated frame in orange and ivory and a broad navy border of diamond chains — a hand-woven Kashkuli kilim from southern Iran in naturally dyed wool.
Design: Diamonds on Light Blue
The light-blue field carries six rows of three small stepped diamond medallions each, in red, ivory, navy and green, each with a small cross-shaped core. Around the field runs a serrated frame in orange and ivory, its zigzag points reaching into the field. The broad navy main border carries chains of small diamonds in red, ivory, orange and green. The geometry is strict yet lively: the motifs follow the same plan but vary in colour from row to row.
Provenance and Construction
The Kashkuli are one of the tribes of the Qashqai confederation in the Zagros mountains of Fars province, southern Iran. This kilim is a hand-woven flatweave in slit tapestry technique, all wool — warp, weft and pattern — and coloured with natural dyes. At about 3 mm it is flat and light. The piece is new.
Uses
- Floor: in the living room, bedroom or hallway, with a non-slip underlay.
- Wall hanging: the clear geometry works well on a wall.
- Throw or layering: over a bench or sofa, or layered over a larger rug.
