An antique Halvai Bidjar in the Mahi pattern — hand-knotted in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran in the 1920s, with a Mahi design in red and ivory on an indigo ground.
Provenance and Heritage
This Halvai Bidjar was hand-knotted in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran in the 1920s. Halvai is a village north-east of the town of Bidjar, and Bidjar rugs from Halvai are known for their dense knotting and firm handle. At 315 × 520 cm it is a very large format.
This is an antique piece, woven in the 1920s — about a hundred years old. It is knotted in hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, at approximately 360,000 knots per m². The pile is 12–15 mm high and the rug weighs approximately 100 kg.
Colour and Composition
The design is the classic Mahi (“fish” / Herati) pattern — small rhomboid leaves arranged around tiny rosettes, repeated across the field in columns, with a stepped central medallion and red-and-blue corner spandrels. The palette is a deep indigo-blue ground, madder red and ivory accents, with touches of green, rose and gold. The broad red main border of palmette-and-vine scrolls is flanked by turquoise-blue guard borders. The colours have softened with age.
Condition
Lightly patinated, with an even pile, no holes or repairs, original selvedges and fringes and an original kilim end on the lower short side.
Presence in the Room
At 315 × 520 cm (16.4 m²) this is a very large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Large living room or library: a large antique carpet that can hold a whole seating area of sofas and armchairs.
- Formal dining room: under a long dining table and its chairs; the all-over Mahi pattern is even and calm.
- Hall or meeting room: a generous hall or conference room where the carpet covers a large part of the floor.
