A dense diamond lattice with small red blossoms on a black field, framed by bright red serrated bands and a border of diagonal stripes — a hand-knotted Baluch rug from Afghanistan with a thick, full wool pile.
Design: Black and Red Lattice
The black field is covered with an even diamond lattice; each diamond holds a small cross-shaped blossom in red. The all-over pattern runs without a medallion from end to end. Around the field, bright red serrated bands form a strong frame. The main border carries a band of diagonal stripes in red, ivory and black, framed by narrow guard stripes. The classic Baluch combination of deep black-brown and glowing red gives the piece a strong, graphic presence.
Provenance and Construction
The Baluch are a people living in the border region of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan; their rugs are known for dark, saturated colours and geometric patterns. This piece was knotted in Afghanistan, with a pile of 100% wool on a cotton warp, at around 160,000 knots per square metre (approx. 103 kpsi). With a pile of about 16 mm it is thick and full underfoot. The rug is new.
