Provenance and Tribal Heritage

Boujad rugs come from the plains around the town of the same name in central Morocco, woven by Berber women. Within the wider Moroccan Berber design family, Boujad is associated with a stronger use of colour: where Beni Ourain stays in monochrome restraint and Azilal favours pictorial freedom on a quieter ground, Boujad turns up the saturation. Dye-rich fields, asymmetric geometries and bold colour pairings are typical of the type.

This piece was hand-knotted by Berber weavers in the Boujad region of central Morocco between approximately 1970 and 1990, entirely in wool, with a medium-deep pile of approximately 8 to 10 mm. The composition follows the Boujad vocabulary — a free-spirited geometry in berry, blue and orange. The dyes are bold but have softened over the decades into a balanced, naturally aged register.

Colour and Composition

The palette pairs warm berry with deep blue and bright orange accents, in the saturated combination typical of Boujad work. The geometric composition is asymmetric and intuitive rather than strictly symmetrical — each motif appears where the weaver chose to place it.

Presence in the Room

At 140 × 310 cm (4.6 × 10.2 ft), 4.3 m² this is a medium room-size piece in a long format. Three contexts in which the vintage Boujad comes into its own:

• Living room: the saturated palette and asymmetric composition give a contemporary living room a clear focal point and a strong colour story.
• Hallway or bedroom runner: the elongated format suits the side of a queen bed or a generous hallway.
• Layered styling: Boujad rugs can be layered over a larger neutral piece in a contemporary boho or mid-century-modern interior, where the saturated motif acts as an accent.
