Abadeh — Tribal Weaving Between Shiraz and Isfahan

The town of Abadeh lies between Shiraz and Isfahan, in the province of Fars. Abadeh rugs draw on the geometric vocabulary of the Qashqai nomads of the region, arranged in a clearer, more ordered layout. This piece is hand-knotted in wool, with a three-medallion field and a rosette border.

It is knotted in 100 % wool on a cotton foundation. As a new rug it has its full pile.

Colour and Composition

A tomato-red field carries three vertically stacked diamond medallions — a dark brown-aubergine centre medallion with a blue-and-cream floral cross, flanked by two cream-and-brown pendant medallions above and below. A serrated petrol-green diamond lattice frames the medallions, and the red field is scattered with tribal motifs: small birds, stars, rosettes, botehs and geometric sprays in indigo blue, light blue, petrol green, mustard-gold, brown and cream. The corner spandrels are worked in dark brown-aubergine with cream Heybatlu corner anchors. A broad ivory-cream main border carries round rosette and flower-wheel motifs in red, blue and brown, divided by blue palmette leaves.

Presence in the Room

At 98 × 147 cm (1.44 m²) this is a small format. Three settings in which it works well:

• Study or library: beside a writing desk or reading chair, where the structured field can be looked at up close.
• Bedside accent: beside a bed, the wool surface and warm red add colour and a soft step.
• Entryway: a small tribal rug that brings colour to a hard-floored entrance.
