Palatial Mamluk Rug
580 × 400 cm · Central Octagon on a Beige Field

A palatial Mamluk carpet knotted in Afghanistan from handspun wool — the Cairene geometry of octagon, star and kaleidoscopic medallion carried across 23.2 m² in beige, sand and powder blue.

Provenance · Mamluk Design, Woven in Afghanistan

The Mamluk carpets of Cairo, woven between the late fifteenth and the sixteenth century, are among the most mathematically constructed floor coverings ever made: a central octagon, ringed by stars, papyrus fronds and small kaleidoscopic medallions, repeated at shifting scales until the whole field reads as a single figure.

The design was taken up again by the workshops of western Afghanistan, where weavers work with handspun, plant-dyed wool and the old drawing. This piece comes from that tradition — the Cairene geometry, executed with Afghan wool and Afghan hands.

Design and Construction

A commanding central octagon anchors the field, surrounded by star elements and the small kaleidoscopic medallions that give the Mamluk repertoire its optical depth. Around them the drawing repeats in smaller registers, so the eye keeps finding new symmetries at closer range.

The ground is a quiet beige with a warm sand tone, deliberately restrained so that the geometry carries the piece. The motifs are traced in soft powder blue, muted terracotta and low earth tones, with ivory used to open up the finer registers. The overall palette is subdued rather than saturated — a large rug that fills a room without competing with what stands on it.

Material and Weave

The pile is 100 % wool, handspun in Afghanistan, knotted onto a cotton foundation. A cotton warp holds its length under tension, which is what keeps a carpet of nearly six metres straight and true over the years. Handspun yarn takes dye unevenly by nature, and that is what produces the gentle horizontal movement across the ground — an abrash that keeps a field of this size alive rather than flat.

Quality

Knotted at approximately 360,000 to 400,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 230 to 260 kpsi — a density well above what this design is usually given, which is why the smaller registers of the Mamluk drawing stay legible instead of collapsing into blocks. The pile is kept low at 8 mm, so the geometry reads cleanly across the full 5.8 metres.

Presence in the Room

At 580 × 400 cm (23.2 m²) this is a palatial format, made for rooms with the floor area to carry it:

  • Dining room: takes a table of up to 400 cm with room left for every chair to stay on the rug when pulled back.
  • Salon or living hall: large enough to seat a full furniture group on the rug rather than around it.
  • Library or banqueting room: the low pile and quiet ground suit a room with height and hard architecture.

Excellent experience with the seller, Karl. He responded to all my questions. In addition to the photos on the website, he sent even more photos and a video of the rug, which is exactly as it appeared. The purchase was simple. Shipping was via UPS and the rug arrived one week later.

We were unsure which rug to choose, and wanted a rug that was in almost new condition. Karl was very honest about the conditions of the rug, even details/"defects" that we cannto necessarily see on a computer screen, In the end, our Tibetan rug came early which was perfect timing for our new home, and in the good condition just as Karl described. We absolutely love our new rug. Thank you.
