Modern Textured Designer Rug
235 × 300 cm · Rust, Gold and Olive · Room Size
Horizontal bands of small woven marks, layered in warm earth tones — hand-knotted in India from wool with reclaimed sari yarn.
A Field Built From Texture
This rug has no medallion, no border and no repeating motif. What organises the surface instead is rhythm: horizontal bands of tiny knotted marks — triangles, ladders, dashes, hooks, chevrons — that change from row to row, the way a hand-woven textile changes when the weaver picks up a different sequence. Some bands are dense and dark, others open into quiet stretches of plain ground. Read from a distance the whole field settles into soft horizontal striping; up close it breaks apart again into hundreds of individual small figures.
The vocabulary is loosely tribal, but the arrangement is contemporary — unstructured, asymmetric, closer to a woven study than to a traditional carpet layout.
Colour
The palette runs through warm earth: a cream to wheat-gold ground shifting band by band, cut through with rust red and deep oxblood, softened by stretches of olive and sage, and marked in places with near-black. Scattered through it are small flecks of pink, apricot and pale grey-blue — individual knots that carry a different fibre and catch the light differently from the wool around them. They are what keeps a largely neutral rug from reading as flat.
Because the tones are layered rather than blocked, the rug changes character with the light: warm and reddish under lamplight, considerably cooler and more olive in daylight.
Material and Construction
The pile is 85 % wool and 15 % viscose on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted in India at a low pile of approximately 7 to 9 mm. The viscose component is reclaimed sari yarn — in the trade often called sari silk, though the fibre is viscose, not silk. It is spun from offcuts and remnants of sari production and carries the irregular colour of its source material, which is why the bright flecks appear at random rather than in a pattern.
Practically it does two things: it puts a fine sheen into an otherwise matte wool surface, and it uses a textile stream that would otherwise be waste. The low pile makes the rug well suited to rooms with chairs and to underfloor heating.
Presence in the Room
At 235 × 300 cm (7.1 m²) this is a room-size rug:
- Dining room: Carries a table for six to eight with chairs staying on the pile when pushed back. The low, dense construction is practical under chair legs.
- Living room: Draws a seating group into one unit, with sofa and armchairs standing on the rug. The horizontal banding widens a room visually when laid across the line of sight.
- Bedroom or study: Soft wool underfoot, and a pattern quiet enough not to compete with furniture or art.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is reclaimed sari yarn?
It is a viscose yarn spun from offcuts and remnants left over from sari production in India. The trade name “sari silk” is widespread, but the fibre is regenerated cellulose — viscose — and is declared as such here. Its appeal is the sheen and the unpredictable colour it brings, since each batch carries whatever tones the source textiles had.
Can this design be made in another size?
Yes. The design is available to order in formats from small mats up to 400 × 300 cm, as runners, and in round dimensions, with a lead time of roughly three to four months. Other colour combinations and true custom sizes are possible — please contact us to discuss a commission.
How should this rug be cleaned?
Vacuum regularly at reduced power, without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Viscose is sensitive to moisture, so blot spills immediately with a dry cloth and never rub or soak. For thorough cleaning, professional rug washing only — no dry cleaning and no domestic wet extraction.
