Design: Herati All-Over

The field carries the Herati pattern as a continuous all-over without a medallion. Its basic unit is a rosette in a fine diamond, flanked by four curved, serrated leaves — known in the trade as mahi, “fish”, because of their shape. The unit repeats in staggered rows across the whole surface, held together by a delicate diamond lattice. The ivory ground keeps the drawing light and open; the motifs stand in broken green, dusty rose, salmon, greyish violet and a dark brownish blue that leads the outlines. The soft sage-green main border carries cartouches with flower rosettes along a curving vine, between narrow dusty-rose guards.

Bidjar Style

Here Bidjar names a style, not the origin: the Kurdish town of Bidjar in western Iran is known for its densely knotted rugs, and Indian workshops take up its designs and its dense knotting. This piece is hand-knotted on a cotton warp at around 90,000 knots per square metre, with a pile of about 18 mm.
