Vintage Tabriz Rug
9 × 13 ft · 276 × 400 cm · Muted Camel, Ivory & Blue
A vintage Tabriz from Iran, approx. 60–80 years old — hand-knotted in wool, with an allover floral design in muted camel, taupe-brown, ivory and soft blue.
Origin and Weaving Tradition
Tabriz is a major workshop city of the Persian rug tradition. By the mid-twentieth century, alongside the city's fine atelier production, a parallel body of workmanlike pieces emerged: generous formats, wool pile and classical compositions worked at a relaxed knot density.
This is a vintage piece, approximately 60 to 80 years old. It is hand-knotted in 100 % wool on a cotton foundation, at approx. 30 raj. The pile is vegetable-dyed wool. Decades of use and washing have settled it into a soft, muted palette.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a classical Tabriz allover floral design: a continuous field of scrolling vinework, palmettes and blossoms with no central medallion, framed by a floral border. The ground is a muted register of warm camel and taupe-brown. The floral drawing is carried largely in ivory and cream, with quiet accents of soft blue running through the blossoms.
Toward the lower end the rug shows a gentle abrash, a natural horizontal shift in the ground tone where a new batch of hand-dyed wool was introduced, running through a secondary border band.
Condition
Very good condition for its age. The pile shows the wear and washing of decades of use, and the colours have softened. Details are visible in the photographs.
Presence in the Room
At 276 × 400 cm (11.04 m²) this is a large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Living room: it anchors a large seating group.
- Dining room: it fits under a substantial dining table, even with the chairs pulled back.
- Open-plan space: it works as a continuous floor area.
Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring; suitable above underfloor heating.
