Provenance and Mrirt Quality

The Beni Ourain are a confederation of Berber tribes who have lived for centuries in the Middle Atlas mountains of northern Morocco. Within the broader Beni Ourain family, Mrirt is recognised as the premium quality — a designation referring both to the village of Mrirt in the Khenifra province and to a tradition of finer knotting and exceptionally soft wool. Mrirt pieces are distinguished from regular Beni Ourain work by a finer knot density, more disciplined drawing, and a surface that combines the characteristic shaggy pile with a noticeably softer hand.

This piece was hand-knotted by Beni Ourain weavers in the Mrirt region of the Middle Atlas, Morocco, from 100% undyed highland wool on a wool foundation. A single stylised lion is drawn across the cream field in charcoal line — a naive, confident figure facing left, mane and tail rendered in a few sure strokes. The deep, soft Mrirt pile makes the rug exceptionally pleasant underfoot, a textile made to be walked on barefoot through the cold Atlas winters.

Colour and Composition

The palette is the classical Beni Ourain idiom: a cream-ivory ground with the lion drawn in charcoal-brown, both in the natural undyed colours of the highland wool. The figure sits alone on an open field, framed at the ends by the characteristic black-and-white striped kilim band and natural wool fringes. The composition rewards both the quick read — the lion is unmistakable — and the close look, where the depth and softness of the pile become the real subject.

Presence in the Room

At 187 × 122 cm (2.3 m²) this is a versatile small-to-medium format. Three contexts in which it comes into its own:

• Modern living room: the premium Mrirt softness is the textbook pairing with mid-century furniture, raw oak and Scandinavian-modern interiors — a rug made to be walked on barefoot.
• Children's room or family space: the lion gives the rug a quietly playful character, and the soft Mrirt wool is gentle for crawling and play.
