Large navy palmette clusters and flowering sprays on a warm brick-red field, framed by a dark border of rosettes — a hand-knotted Malayer from western Iran, around 1960–70, professionally restored.
Design: Florals on Red
The brick-red field carries a symmetrical floral all-over design: along the central axis sit large palmette clusters in navy, flanked by curving leaves and flowering sprays in blue, ivory, ochre and pink. The drawing is mirrored along the long axis and repeats in rhythm from top to bottom, giving the elongated format a calm, even structure. A dark navy main border with rosettes and small blossoms in red and ochre frames the field between narrow guard stripes.
Provenance and Condition
Malayer lies in Hamadan province in western Iran and is the centre of a weaving region of many villages. This piece is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, at around 200,000 knots per square metre (approx. 129 kpsi), with a pile of about 9 mm. Its condition is very good; the rug has been professionally restored, with small re-knotted areas.
