Palatial Kilim Scandinavian Style – Hand-Woven in Grey, Brown and Beige
The clarity of Scandinavian design, hand-woven in virgin wool – a palatial flatweave for generous interiors.
Provenance and Weaving Tradition
Kilim weaving is one of the oldest textile traditions of the Orient – a flatweave rather than a knotted pile rug, with the design carried by the warp and weft themselves. In the twentieth century, Scandinavian designers of the Swedish modernist movement reinterpreted this ancient idiom in a quietly geometric, minimalist language – the Swedish kilim style.
This piece was hand-woven in Afghanistan from virgin wool on a wool warp, following the Scandinavian-modern interpretation of the kilim tradition. The composition relies on quiet geometric nuance and the natural mottling of the wool – the abrash effect, those organic colour variations that show new facets under different lighting conditions. The result is a flatweave that links textile heritage and contemporary Scandinavian aesthetics.
Presence in the Room
At 365 × 510 cm (18.6 m², approx. 12 × 17 ft) this is a palatial flatweave format. Three contexts in which the kilim comes into its own:
- Grand living room or loft: anchoring a large sofa group of four to six pieces, the quiet grey-brown-beige palette opens up the room rather than weighing it down.
- Stately conference or dining hall: under a long table for ten to fourteen, the flatweave gives the floor a continuous quality from above.
- Modern manor or galleried space: in an interior built around natural materials – stone, oak, linen, leather – the kilim functions as a quiet horizontal anchor.
