A checkerboard drawn by texture alone: smooth squares of cut pile alternate with squares of fine loop lines, all in one warm, muted tan — hand-knotted in Nepal from Tibetan highland wool.
Pattern by Texture
The surface is divided into a checkerboard grid: squares of smooth pile alternate with squares built from fine parallel lines. The effect comes entirely from the cut-loop technique: part of the wool loops is cut during knotting, part is left closed. Cut pile absorbs light and looks matt, closed loops reflect it and appear lighter. Depending on the angle and daylight the relationship reverses — the pattern moves rather than standing still. There is no border, no frame and no centre; the structure runs to the edges, making the rug a calm surface that never competes with furniture or colour.
Material and Knotting
The pile is Tibetan highland wool, from sheep raised at great altitude, with a long staple and high natural lanolin content that makes it soft to the touch. It is knotted in the Tibetan method over a metal rod at 100 knots per square inch, roughly 155,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp. At a pile height of about 8 mm the cut-loop structure stays clearly legible.
