Qum Rug · 6.8 × 4.3 ft Kork Wool
208 × 132 cm · Orange and Midnight Blue
A Qum (also Ghom or Qom) hand-knotted in fine kork wool: golden scrolls sweep across a glowing orange-red field around a midnight-blue star medallion, framed by a deep blue floral border. A Persian rug full of strength and warmth.
Provenance: Qum
Qum, south of Tehran, came late to rug weaving: its workshops only began in the early 20th century. Free of tribal conventions, its weavers drew on the whole repertoire of classical Persian design and became known for fine, precise drawing. Alongside its famous silk rugs, Qum produces pieces in kork wool, the soft, lustrous wool from the neck and shoulders of the sheep, whose thin yarns allow small knots and delicate detail.
Design: Scrolls Around a Star
At the centre lies a midnight-blue star medallion with an ivory core, from which fine blossoms in pink, light blue and green unfold. Around it, golden scrolls sweep in wide spirals across the orange-red field, set with small flowers and leaves, while ivory spandrels with floral sprays fill the four corners. The broad midnight-blue main border carries palmettes and blossoms in red, gold and green, accompanied by light guard borders and a red outer band.
The format has its own Persian name: dozar, “two zar”. The zar is an old Persian unit of just over a metre, so a dozar measures about 2 × 1.3 m, exactly the size of this rug.
Quality
Knotted at approximately 360,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 232 kpsi, in 100% wool on a cotton warp, with a pile of about 8 mm. At this density the scrolls run smoothly and every blossom keeps its crisp outline.
Presence in the Room
At 208 × 132 cm (6.8 × 4.3 ft, 2.75 m²) this is a versatile format:
- Living room: in front of the sofa or beneath a coffee table, see our living room rugs.
- Bedroom: beside or at the foot of the bed, a warm note of colour.
- Study or entrance hall: beneath a desk or as a colourful welcome in a generous hallway.
More pieces: Qum rugs, medium area rugs and our Persian rugs.
