Tabriz 50 Raj Rug
100 × 150 cm · Medallion on Burgundy
A round ivory medallion with a dark-blue core on a deep burgundy field, ivory spandrels and an ivory-and-gold border of lilac rosettes — a finely knotted Tabriz in 50 Raj quality, of cork wool and silk.
Design: Medallion on Burgundy
At the centre of the deep burgundy field sits a round ivory medallion with a dark-blue star at its core, surrounded by a wreath of finely drawn blossoms. Delicate tendrils with roses, palmettes and small buds in pink, lilac, green, gold and blue spread across the field. Ivory spandrels echo the medallion in the four corners. The broad main border on ivory and gold carries large rosette cartouches in lilac between scrolling vines, framed by narrow red and orange guard stripes. The drawing is precise and richly detailed — a classic floral Tabriz composition with medallion.
Quality: 50 Raj
In Tabriz, knot density is given in Raj — the number of knots per 7 cm. 50 Raj corresponds to roughly 500,000 knots per square metre (approx. 320 kpsi), a fineness that allows this level of detail. The pile is 80 % cork wool and 20 % silk on a cotton foundation; the silk adds points of sheen within the design. With a short pile of about 8 mm the rug lies flat and crisp. Tabriz in northwest Iran is one of the oldest weaving centres of the region, known for a wide range of designs from floral medallion rugs to pictorial pieces.
Presence in the Room
At 100 × 150 cm (3.3 × 4.9 ft, 1.50 m²) this is a versatile small format:
- Bedroom: beside the bed as a bedside rug, see our small rugs.
- Living room or study: as an accent in front of an armchair, a sideboard or a desk.
- Entrance: as a fine entry rug in the hallway.
More pieces: Tabriz rugs and our Persian rugs.
