Sarouk Rug 4.5 x 7 ft
220 × 140 cm · Rose Medallion on Navy
A rose medallion in coral, pink and soft green on a deep navy field, framed by rose-bouquet spandrels and a light border of blossoms — a hand-knotted Sarouk from central Iran.
Design: Roses on Navy
At the centre of the deep navy field sits a lobed medallion of roses — concentric rings of blossoms in coral red, pink, ivory and soft green around a small rosette, continued above and below by bouquet-shaped pendants. The open navy ground around it lets the medallion stand out clearly. The four spandrels are filled with dense rose bouquets on a darker ground, echoing the medallion. The light main border in beige and ivory carries a sequence of roses and leaves in coral, pink and green, between narrow guard stripes. The rose design is typical of Sarouk work and gives the piece its warm, floral character.
Provenance and Construction
Sarouk is a village in the Arak region of central Iran that has given its name to one of the best-known Persian rug groups. This piece is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a pile of 100% wool, at around 250,000 knots per square metre (approx. 161 kpsi), with a pile of about 10 mm that gives a full, soft handle. The rug is new.
