Vintage Afshar Sirjan Rug

Twenty-four octagonal compartments in six rows of four, each filled with a hooked tree-like motif in ivory, salmon, olive brown, terracotta or deep blue — a tribal Afshar from the Sirjan region, knotted wool on wool around 1950–60.
Provenance: The Afshar of Sirjan
The Afshar are a Turkic tribe that settled in large numbers around Sirjan and Kerman in southeastern Iran. Their rugs keep a bold, geometric vocabulary that sets them apart from the city workshops of the region. This piece is built wool on wool: pile, warp and weft are all sheep’s wool. Among the semi-nomadic Afshar this is the older, more original construction; it needs no bought-in cotton and gives a softer, more supple fabric than a cotton foundation.
Design: Twenty-Four Compartments
The field is divided into twenty-four octagonal compartments, six rows of four, each framed in dark blue and set on a salmon ground. Every gül encloses a strictly geometric motif of a central stem with hooked cross-arms, recalling a stylised tree or anchor. The dividing bars are drawn with a fine blue and white braid, with small diamond stars at the crossings. The fillings change from compartment to compartment — ivory, salmon, olive brown, terracotta and deep blue follow no fixed rhythm, and the motifs themselves vary in line and direction: the drawing was worked from memory, not read from a cartoon. The light main border carries small diamonds and triangles in red, blue and ochre, framed by narrow guards with zigzag bands. Based on our assessment, the wool is dyed with vegetable dyes.
