Ghiasabad Sarouk Rug
155 × 112 cm · Grey Field, Biscuit Border
A Sarouk in an unusual colourway: rust-red and salmon flowers on a soft grey field, framed by a biscuit border of garden roses — hand-knotted in Ghiasabad for Sherkat Farsh.
Provenance: Ghiasabad and Sherkat Farsh
The Sarouk district near Arak in central Iran has given its name to one of the best-known families of Persian rugs: densely knotted, with full floral drawing. Within the region, Ghiasabad is regarded in the trade as a mark of particularly careful work. This piece comes from the production of Sherkat Farsh, the Iran Carpet Company founded as a state enterprise in the 1930s, which organises the weaving workshops and supervises their work.
Design: Flowers on Grey
Classic Sarouks are associated with deep madder red and ivory grounds; this one sets its flowers on a soft grey field. At the centre, a ring of rust-red blossoms gathers around a small rosette without closing into a solid medallion. Bouquets and sprays in rust red, salmon, ivory, navy, olive and light blue spread from it to the four corners. The biscuit main border carries a garland of garden roses in rust and salmon, between narrow guard stripes in red and navy and an outer band in khaki.
Quality
Knotted with the symmetric knot at approximately 360,000 knots per square metre, roughly 232 kpsi, in 100% wool on a cotton foundation. The wool has a fine natural sheen, so the grey of the field shifts slightly with the light.
Presence in the Room
At 155 × 112 cm (5.1 × 3.7 ft, 1.74 m²) this is a compact accent format:
- Living room: in front of an armchair or a reading corner, see our living room rugs.
- Bedroom: beside the bed; the grey palette reads unusually contemporary for a Sarouk.
- Study or entrance hall: beneath a desk or as a quiet welcome in the hallway.
More pieces: small area rugs and our Persian rugs.
