Semi-Antique Mahal Sarouk Rug
12 × 18 ft · 380 × 540 cm · Rust, Navy & Ivory
A semi-antique Mahal Sarouk from central Iran, circa 1950 — a floral medallion on an open rust-red field, framed by a broad blossom border.
Origin and Weaving Tradition
This piece comes from the Mahal region around Arak in central Iran, home to the Mahal, Sultanabad and Sarouk weaving cluster. It was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, using the Persian knot.
This is a semi-antique piece, woven circa 1950, roughly 75 to 85 years old. The design follows the open-field Sarouk drawing: a central diamond medallion with floral pendants on a largely open ground, floral corner spandrels and a broad, multi-band blossom border.
Colour and Composition
The palette is built on a warm rust-red open field, with the central medallion and border accents in deep navy and indigo. The floral work carries salmon, soft rose, ivory and muted green. Decades of light and use have softened the colours into a balanced register. The largely open field leaves space around the medallion.
Condition
Very good condition with full pile and an age-appropriate patina.
Presence in the Room
At 380 × 540 cm (20.5 m²) this is a very large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Large living or dining room: an open rust field under a dining table or seating group, with room for the medallion to be seen.
- Open-plan interior: a single large rug that defines a seating or dining zone in a wide space.
- Hotel lobby or conference room: a large-format piece for hospitality and representative spaces.
