Design Heritage and Knotting Tradition
The Ziegler Mahal design was refined in the late 19th century by Ziegler & Co. in the Mahal/Sultanabad region of central Iran — large-scale floral palmettes arranged in a symmetrical all-over layout, scaled and recoloured for Western architectural tastes. The style became one of the most enduring bridges between Persian knotting tradition and European interiors.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan between 1990 and 2000, this palatial piece carries the design forward in 100 % hand-spun wool dyed with natural pigments on a cotton foundation. The muted palette — sand beige, muted rose, garnet red — reads as if softened by decades of light, while the construction is robust and freshly preserved. A piece of this scale and quality is also a lasting investment.
Presence in the Room
At 545 × 396 cm (21.6 m², approx. 18 × 13 ft) this is a true palatial format. Three contexts in which the piece reaches its full effect:
- Grand salon and stately interiors: beneath a generous sofa group with classical or eclectic furniture, the Ziegler Mahal grounds the space with quiet authority.
- Formal dining hall: under a long table for ten to fourteen, the all-over floral palmettes read as a horizontal artwork from above.
