Ziegler Oushak Rug
250 × 300 cm · Ivory, Soft Blue & Gold
An open ivory field of large-scale floral arabesques in soft blue, gold and terracotta — a Djoharian hand-knotted rug in the classical Ziegler Oushak idiom, with a low pile and a muted vintage-look palette.
Ziegler Oushak — Anglo-Persian Heritage, Djoharian Production
The Ziegler style traces back to the late 19th century, when the Manchester-based Ziegler & Co. commissioned Persian workshops to weave rugs with softer palettes and more spacious drawings, tailored to Western interiors. The Oushak vocabulary — large-scale floral arabesques, open fields, low pile — has since become one of the most recognisable design families in interior design.
This piece is a new, hand-knotted Djoharian production in India, woven in the classical Ziegler Oushak idiom: muted floral drawing, a deliberately low pile for clear pattern reading, and a wool surface that softens beautifully with use. The grounds are kept low and flat-woven in feel, so the floral tracery reads as the principal movement across an open field.
Colour and Composition
On a warm ivory-cream ground, an all-over pattern of stylised palmettes, leafy vine-scrolls and small rosettes is drawn loosely across the open field, framed by an angular palmette-and-vine border on a light ground with soft-blue guard stripes. The palette is muted and harmonious: ivory and cream, dove blue, gold and mustard, terracotta-rust and olive green, with touches of dark brown. The low pile and quiet colouring give the piece its distinctive vintage-look character — a calm, architectural surface rather than a high, dense one.
Presence in the Room
At 250 × 300 cm (7.5 m²) this is a generous large room-size rug. Three contexts in which the Ziegler Oushak reaches its full effect:
- Living room anchor: Beneath a sofa configuration, the muted floral field reads as a refined foundation — quiet enough to live with, distinctive enough to define a room.
- Dining room for 8–10: Under an extending table, the low pile keeps chair movement effortless and the floral drawing reads clearly from above.
- Industrial or modern interior: Against concrete, steel and oak, the soft Ziegler palette becomes a textile counterpoint to the architecture.
