Provenance: Bidjar and Sherkat Farsh

Bidjar (also Bijar), in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gave its name to the densest rugs in the Persian canon: the wefts are beaten down so firmly that they have long been called the “iron rugs of Persia.” This piece was made in the workshops of Sherkat Farsh, the Iran Carpet Company founded as a state enterprise in the 1930s, whose production is known in the trade for consistent workshop quality and classical designs.

Design: The Rosenbidjar

The Rosenbidjar (“rose Bidjar”) is one of the most popular Bidjar designs: naturalistic roses, inspired by the European rose motifs Persian weavers adopted in the 19th century, are strewn across the field. Here they glow in crimson on an ivory ground, surrounded by fine vines, blossoms and golden-olive scrolls. At the centre lies a star medallion in red with a sky-blue and navy outline, extended by two small pendants; the field itself is shaped like a large cartouche, framed by sky-blue spandrels with further rose sprays.

The broad red main border carries rose bouquets, blue palmettes and small ivory dotted ornaments, held between narrow guard stripes in gold and blue. Ivory fringes finish both ends.

Quality

Knotted at approximately 320,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 206 kpsi, in 100% wool on a cotton foundation. The rug weighs around 20 kg and shows the dense, firm Bidjar construction, lying flat and heavy on the floor.
