Semi-Antique Doroksh Rug
265 x 350 cm · Signed
A signed semi-antique Doroksh rug from the village of Doroksh in the Khorasan region of north-east Iran — hand-knotted in wool with a central medallion and the signature of its weaver.
A Signed Semi-Antique Doroksh
This semi-antique Doroksh rug comes from the village of Doroksh in the Khorasan region of north-east Iran, woven in the second quarter of the twentieth century (c. 1925–1950). With its generous 265 x 350 cm format it is an imposing, highly decorative piece. Especially noteworthy is the signature of the weaver, visible in the upper medallion area, which points to a workshop or a known weaver.
The Medallion Design
The design centres on a central floral medallion that blossoms in a radiant, star-like composition, surrounded by detailed palmettes, vines and stylised floral motifs. The dense floral field and its symmetry are typical of the weaving tradition of Khorasan. The classic Persian composition is framed by several borders, including a broad main border of rosettes and sweeping vines.
Wool & Craftsmanship
The rug is hand-knotted from wool over a hard-wearing cotton foundation, with a pile of roughly 0.8 cm. It unites aesthetic elegance with durability — a piece made to be lived with for generations.
Colour
The palette is rich and classical: a dominant ground of deep carmine red, set against midnight blue outlines, with ivory for contrast and accents and antique gold-yellow through the medallion and floral detail. The colours have mellowed with age, giving the rug a warm depth.
Presence in the Room
At 265 x 350 cm (9.28 m²) this is a generous large-room rug — a 9 x 11 ft format:
- Living room: an imposing centrepiece that anchors a full seating arrangement.
- Dining room: ample room for a large table and chairs to sit entirely on the rug.
- Reception or office: a rug that brings history to a large space.
A signed semi-antique piece of this size is a natural centrepiece for the reception rooms of a Mayfair or Marylebone house, or the hall of a Scottish country house — and it reaches London or Edinburgh within 2–7 working days.
