Three stepped diamond medallions, two in deep indigo and one in ivory, on a glowing red field with a lively abrash — a village Heriz knotted around 1950–60, framed by a bright ivory border.
Provenance: Heriz
Heriz is a small town in the highlands of northwestern Iran, in the Azeri-speaking region near the Caucasus. The town and its surrounding villages are known for bold, geometric designs knotted without drawn cartoons, from the weaver’s memory. Architects and interior designers have long favoured Heriz rugs because their clear geometry holds its own beside strong contemporary furniture.
Design: Three Medallions
Three stepped diamond medallions line up along the length of the field. The centre one stands on an ivory ground, flanked by two medallions in deep indigo with yellow, blue and red motifs. Around them, the red field is strewn with geometric blossoms, hooks, small diamonds and stylised animal figures — the visual language of the Heriz villages. The red ground shows a lively abrash, the natural shifts of tone that arise when hand-dyed wool from different dye lots is used during knotting.
The ivory main border carries a continuous pattern of crosses and stars in red, blue and yellow, framed by narrow guard stripes with zigzag bands.
