Tekab Bidjar Rug · Very Fine
170 × 110 cm · Mahi Herati on Rust Red

A classic Tekab Bidjar in cork wool — the Mahi Herati field drawn edge to edge on rust red, with an ivory medallion and dark corner spandrels carrying large scrolling arabesques.

Provenance · Tekab

Bidjar, in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gives its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — the pile is beaten down so firmly while the wool is still damp that collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia.” Tekab lies within this weaving district, and Tekab Bidjars are regarded as the most accurate and finely drawn of the group.

Design and Construction

The field is worked in the Mahi Herati pattern — the diamond lattice with curved leaves and rosettes known as the “fish” design — running unbroken across a rust-red ground in sage green, blue, brown and ivory. At this knot count the lattice holds its full detail from border to border.

At the centre sits a stepped ivory medallion with a near-black heart filled with olive and rose blossoms, extended by cusped pendants above and below. The four corner spandrels are near-black and carry unusually large, freely drawn arabesque scrolls in ivory, sage, gold and brown — a baroque flourish against the strict geometry of the field, and the detail that distinguishes this piece from a standard Bidjar. The main border runs on beige-ivory with palmettes and vine, framed by sage-green guard stripes.

Material and Weave

The pile is fine cork wool — the soft, especially shear-resistant lamb's wool — on a cotton foundation. Knotted at 7 × 7 knots per square centimetre, which is 490,000 knots per square metre or roughly 316 kpsi (knots per square inch). That is very fine for a Bidjar. The pile stands 12 mm, with short fringes at both ends.

Presence in the Room

At 170 × 110 cm (1.87 m²) this is a versatile small format:

  • In front of a sofa: large enough to anchor a seating area without covering the floor.
  • Entrance hall: a formal welcome, with the density to take daily traffic.
  • Study or bedroom: the fine drawing rewards being seen at close range.

Care and Everyday Use

Vacuum regularly; for deeper cleaning we recommend a professional hand wash — no dry cleaning. Suitable for floors with underfloor heating; see our guide to rugs and underfloor heating. On smooth surfaces an anti-slip underlay is recommended.

Excellent experience with the seller, Karl. He responded to all my questions. In addition to the photos on the website, he sent even more photos and a video of the rug, which is exactly as it appeared. The purchase was simple. Shipping was via UPS and the rug arrived one week later.

We were unsure which rug to choose, and wanted a rug that was in almost new condition. Karl was very honest about the conditions of the rug, even details/"defects" that we cannto necessarily see on a computer screen, In the end, our Tibetan rug came early which was perfect timing for our new home, and in the good condition just as Karl described. We absolutely love our new rug. Thank you.
