Rudbar — A Hamadan Village Weave

Rudbar is a weaving village in the wider Hamadan region of west-central Persia, a long-established rug-producing area. Hamadan village rugs like this one are single-wefted, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a sturdy construction and confident geometric drawing. This piece is vintage, knotted in the 1970s–80s, and carries the warm, lived-in character of a village rug.

Colour and Composition

An ivory field is centred on a bold terracotta-red stepped medallion with a hooked outline and a central rosette in orange, teal and navy. Across the ivory ground, stylised flowers and star-rosettes are scattered in navy, rust-brown, teal-green, salmon and gold. A dark navy-black main border carries a continuous chain of rosettes in red, ivory and teal, framed by narrow guard stripes. Ivory wool fringes finish the ends.

Presence in the Room

At 107 × 153 cm (1.64 m²) this is a versatile small format. Three contexts in which the Rudbar comes into its own:

• Entrance or hallway: the village weave and warm palette make a welcoming first impression in an entry or beside a console.
• Beside the bed: a soft wool surface underfoot; the small format works alongside a bed or in a reading corner.
• Accent in a living room: layered over a larger plain rug or set before an armchair, it adds tribal character and a point of colour.
