Vintage Taznakht Berber Rug
100 x 146 cm · Brick Red & Orange
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
Taznakht rugs come from the small town of the same name in Morocco's southern High Atlas, where Berber women of the Ouaouzguite tribes have been weaving for generations. The region is known for short-pile rugs in warm earth tones — terracotta, brick red, orange — and the sheep's wool of the southern slopes. Where the Beni Ourain of the Middle Atlas keep to disciplined cream-and-charcoal compositions, Taznakht work embraces saturated colour as the primary expressive material.
This piece was hand-knotted around 1980 in 100% hand-spun sheep's wool on a wool foundation, and carries the abstract, intuitive composition typical of nomadic Berber craft. The low pile of 3 to 5 mm and small format make it a practical everyday rug with tribal character.
Colour and Composition
The palette pairs warm brick red melange with bright orange accents — a saturated combination characteristic of southern Atlas weaving. The abstract motifs follow the intuitive vocabulary of nomadic Berber craft, with each element placed where the weaver chose rather than where a strict pattern would have directed.
Presence in the Room
At 100 x 146 cm (3.3 x 4.8 ft), 1.5 m² this is a small, everyday format. Three contexts in which the vintage Taznakht reaches its full effect:
- Bedside or entryway: the small format and warm palette make this an ideal companion in a personal space where craft should signal quietly.
- Reading chair or informal corner: the tribal motifs give the rug a quietly playful character that works particularly well in informal living spaces.
- Boho or rustic interior: the brick-red palette grounds neutral interiors and lifts boho, mid-century, or rustic schemes — the rug pairs naturally with raw wood, leather, linen and unglazed ceramics.

Frequently Asked Questions
What sets Taznakht apart from other Moroccan Berber rugs?
Within the Moroccan Berber family, each region stands for its own design signature. Beni Ourain (Middle Atlas): monochrome, long pile, black diamonds on cream. Beni Mguild (Middle Atlas): restrained diamond geometry in earth tones. Boujad (plains of central Morocco): rich, free colour geometry. Taznakht stands out for its low pile and saturated earth tones, knotted by women of the Ouaouzguite tribe in the southern High Atlas.
What does wool-on-wool mean?
In classic Berber construction, pile, warp and weft are made entirely of wool — unlike many Persian weavings, where warp and weft are cotton. Wool-on-wool gives the rug a flexible, soft hand and a slightly irregular way of lying in the room. The rug is suitable for underfloor heating.
How do I care for a low-pile vintage Taznakht?
Vacuum regularly without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. For low pile, a smooth suction nozzle is sufficient. Blot stains immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. We recommend a professional hand wash for vintage Berbers every 5 to 7 years or as needed.
