Isfahan — City of the Safavid Shahs

Isfahan became the capital of the Persian empire in 1598 under the Safavid Shahs, and the city's knotting workshops have a long rug-making tradition. This piece was hand-knotted in Isfahan, Iran.

The pile is 90 % wool (Kurkwool) and 10 % silk, on a 100 % silk warp. Knot density is approximately 1,000,000 knots per m² (approx. 645 kpsi). As a new rug it has its full pile.

Composition and Palette

A dark-red inner field carries a blue-and-gold central star medallion with a dark-blue core, with dense curling arabesques radiating outward. A dark-blue border frames the composition; olive-brown and ivory tones run through the floral lines, and silk highlights catch the light.

Presence in the Room

At 112 × 163 cm (1.83 m², approx. 4 × 5 ft) this is a small format. Three settings in which it works well:

• Library or study: beside a writing desk or beneath a reading chair.
• Entrance hall or salon: beneath a console or in a small reception area.
• Bedroom or boudoir: at the foot of a bed or beside a dressing area, where the silk highlights catch the light.
