A new Afghan Arijana kilim — a central chain of green hexagonal medallions on an ivory ground, scattered with multicolour tribal motifs.
Arijana — Afghan Tribal Weaving
The Arijana kilims are hand-woven by Afghan workshops in the north and around Kandahar. Each piece is flat-woven from hand-spun wool and dyed with vegetable dyes, in a geometric tribal design. The result is a thin, reversible textile that lies close to the floor.
This is a new, unused piece in a large format. It is a flatweave — no pile — in which the design is carried entirely by the warp and weft.
Colour and Composition
The composition is built on an ivory-cream ground carrying a central vertical chain of green-outlined hexagonal medallions down the long axis, each enclosing a multicolour star motif in red, gold, blue, violet or turquoise. Across the open ivory field, scattered hooked “ram's-horn” clusters and small snowflake-stars repeat in the same palette. Ivory and green structure the field, while red, gold-mustard, blue, violet, turquoise and olive accents animate it.
Presence in the Room
At 242 × 324 cm (7.84 m²) this is a large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Open living room: beneath a sofa group, the flatweave lies flat and adds no bulk under furniture legs.
- Dining room: under a larger dining table, the medallion field can be seen clearly from above.
- Loft or minimalist interior: against concrete, oak or steel, the ivory ground and the tribal colours set a contrast to plain architecture.
A flatweave of this size suits the open kitchen-diner of a Cotswold barn conversion or a loft in Shoreditch, where it lies flat under furniture and is easy to live with — and it reaches London or the Cotswolds within 2–7 working days.
