A new hand-knotted Mughal rug from Agra in northern India, woven in a vintage Tabriz design associated with the PETAG workshops — a beige-and-brown palette with a floral design and a light wash.
Provenance and Design Background
The city of Agra in northern India has a hand-knotting tradition reaching back to the Mughal era. This rug is newly hand-knotted in Agra in a vintage Tabriz design of the kind associated with the PETAG workshops (Persische Teppich Gesellschaft AG), which revived such patterns in the early twentieth century. Their roots lie in the court carpets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Design and Construction
A central medallion and an all-over floral field of palmettes, scrolling vines and blossoms are worked in the Tabriz manner and framed by a classic main border. The pile is wool on a cotton warp and weft, hand-knotted and clipped to a low, even pile of approximately 1.1 cm. Each piece is an individual one-off; small variations in wash and abrash are part of its hand-made character.
Colour and Composition
The palette is soft and warm: a beige and ivory ground with browns and muted earth tones, and the floral design picked out in gentle contrast. A light wash gives the rug a vintage, antique-look finish.
Presence in the Room
At 260 × 343 cm (8.5 × 11.3 ft, 8.9 m²) this is a large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Dining room: under a table for six to eight, with room for the chairs to stay on the rug when drawn back.
- Living room: large enough to carry a full seating group on a single ground.
- Entrance hall, library or office: a classic floral rug for a larger space.
Made to Order
This design is woven to order in our workshops in Agra and Jaipur, so it can be commissioned in other sizes and colourways. Lead times typically run a few months; we are glad to advise on proportions and palette.
