Hand-spun Turkish wool in a deep indigo-blue field — a Samsun Collection piece from the late 1990s.
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
The Samsun Collection is a Turkish weaving programme of the late 1990s, named after the Black Sea city of Samsun. The rugs are known for dense construction and a calm colour palette.
This piece draws on the Azeri design tradition within the broader Sarouk-Mahal family of Persian floral designs, which travelled westward in the nineteenth century and were reinterpreted in Turkish and Caucasian weaving regions. It was hand-knotted in hand-spun Turkish wool on a wool foundation with the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, dyed with mineral and vegetable pigments.
Colour and Composition
The piece is built around a deep, gently abrashed indigo-blue field. A small ivory-and-rust central medallion floats at the centre, surrounded by an open scatter of floral sprays and curling vines in rust-red, terracotta, navy, ivory and soft sage. The composition is framed by a broad ivory main border with a flowering-tree and serrated-leaf motif, set between rust-red guard stripes. The blue ground keeps the piece calm, while the warm florals give it life.
Presence in the Room
At 278 × 344 cm (9.6 m², approx. 9 × 11 ft) this is an extra-large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Samsun works well:
- Spacious living room: under a generous sofa group, the indigo-and-rust palette suits interiors with natural materials — wood, leather, linen.
- Dining room: under a long table for eight to ten, the central medallion reads as a pattern from above; the dense pile keeps chairs steady on the rug.
- Office or reception room: a calm, classic floor for a larger room.
