In these rugs silk is used alongside wool, either as highlights that outline the pattern or as a substantial part of the pile. Where silk picks out the design, it catches the light and makes motifs stand out against a matt wool ground; where it makes up a larger share, the whole surface gains depth and sheen.
The proportion varies widely, from a few per cent in a fine Isfahan or Tabriz to more than half in contemporary designer pieces. Each product lists the exact composition. As a rule, the more silk, the more care the rug needs, and the better it suits rooms with lighter traffic.
